Tips to alleviate your PMS

Estrogen – a female sex hormone produced by the ovaries – is released in the organism at the beginning of menstruation and reaches its peak at ovulation.
It is responsible for the skin’s glow, breast size, distribution of body fat, protection of nerve cells and also for preparing the uterus for reproduction. It is a fundamental hormone in PMS.
Low estrogen levels in the days before menstruation has a big impact on all emotional symptoms, as this hormone is related to the production of serotonin.

The less estrogen, the less serotonin.

Progesterone – also a female hormone – is produced from the ovulation on, with the help of the corpus luteum.

Its main function is to prepare the inside of the uterus to receive the fertilised egg. Progesterone acts as a natural anxiolytic, increasing the brain’s ability to regulate the nervous system and to decrease symptoms such as anxiety, irritability and stress.

How to live with PMS

When a woman is suffering from PMS, the way she feels and sees herself is not the same.
The way in which she reacts changes and even her tone of voice is different. Her body is not the same, and she often feels more bloated and fatter, sometimes in pain, under-rested and irritable – which is not a pleasant picture at all.

Shall we relativise? Try it out!

• Do not take yourself too seriously nor take things too personally;

• Be patient with yourself and your body;

• Postpone serious conversations and important decisions, because it is clearly not the best time to be focused and reasoned;

• Get more rest at this time of the month, because the organism is getting ready to release menstrual blood and consumes a lot of energy.

As with almost everything in life, there is light at the end of the tunnel for women suffering from PMS and, once again, diet is the basis of everything.

I always talk about the importance of diet in organic regulation and balance, and how it can be used to reduce discomfort in our lives. PMS is no different and, as always, it is best to start by making dietary changes.
