Stretch Marks – Causes and Prevention
Stretch marks are quite common, especially in women. However, the appearance of stretch marks is not an indicator of a health problem but can be a real aesthetic discomfort.
Studies indicate that 70% of women and 40% of men, during adolescence, develop stretch marks. The rate is also quite high in pregnant women, but the appearance of stretch marks varies depending on the size and weight of the fetus.
Stretch marks are small lesions that appear on the skin due to the breakage of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. They appear when sudden changes occur in the body, usually associated with weight gain or loss, fluid retention, and in the case of women, during pregnancy.
The skin has elastic properties that allow it to stretch and shrink, but this flexibility is limited. The rapid and exaggerated stretching of the skin can cause the rupture or damage of the elastic fibers and thus stretch marks appear.
Stretch marks can be…
- Red or/and Purple Stretch marks
They are stretch marks in their initial phase and therefore it is easier to eliminate them as the skin’s ability to regenerate is high.
At this stage, it is recommended to apply a good moisturizing cream so that the skin can recover and regain elasticity. Choose an hydrating moisturizing that contains high oils or high hydrating components in its composition: Rosehip Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Shea Butter.
- White Stretch marks
This type of stretch marks have not been treated in time. This happens because there is a lack of blood at the site.
At this stage, it is more complicated to soften its appearance, but it is essential to ensure good skin hydration. White stretch marks can only be reduced or even eliminated with the help of aesthetic treatments that stimulate local blood circulation, such as microneedling or electrical stimulation.
What can cause stretch marks?
- Sudden fluctuations in weight;
- Pregnancy;
- Sudden increase in muscle mass;
- Peak growth in adolescence;
- Genetic Factors;
- Fluid retention;
Warn signals
The most favorable areas for the appearance of stretch marks are the places where there is a greater storage of body fat, such as the belly, thighs, breasts, flanks, buttocks, legs, arms and shoulders.
Prevention
There are no treatments that can prevent the appearance of stretch marks and that is why we have to be more ceareful in our choices. Maintain healthy eating habits and exercise to avoid weight fluctuations. Drink plenty of water throughout your day to ensure your body is properly hydrated.

If you smoke, quit smoking! Not only is it harmful to your overall health, it also promotes premature skin aging.
Avoid bathing in very hot water.
Prevention Technique
Dry Brushing – at least twice a week, before bathing, promote a good exfoliation of your skin. It is important to keep the blood circulation active to reduce the aesthetic impact and prevent the appearance of new stretch marks.
